Customer Introduction

This clinical-stage medical technology company is developing a miniature, implantable heart device to regulate pressure between chambers. Using advanced shape-memory metal, it is about the size of a penny and requires compact, efficient electronics. They partnered with Voler Systems on the design of the essential electronic subsystems.

Problem/Goal

  • Needs miniaturized electronics

Electronics will fit within a penny-sized form factor, supporting both mechanical and sensing functions, and will monitor internal pressures, communicate data, and control the behavior of the implant.
  • Needs ultra-low-power operation and reliable wireless communication

Rechargeable power source that is supported by highly efficient power management while communicating wirelessly during and after implantation.
  • Needs a safe and effective recharge of the implant inside the body

A customized external charging method can safely and reliably transfer energy through the chest.

Solution

Voler Systems delivered a tightly engineered solution resulting in successful in-human clinical trials, including:

  • Designed ultra-low-power electronics to support miniaturized implant and manage the behavior of the heat-shaped memory metal component that regulates pressure inside the heart.
  • Developed the wireless communication system that provides real-time data during catheter-based placement and supports ongoing device monitoring after implantation.
  • Created a custom external charging wand that transfers power through the chest to recharge the device’s internal battery.
  • Engineered power management circuits that allow continuous operation and communication while preserving battery life within a highly-constrained form factor.
  • Collaborated with the company and mechanical engineers to align electronics’ performance with size, safety, and clinical workflow requirements.

Results & Benefits

  • Delivered ultra-low-power electronics that fit within the client's tiny implantable device.

  • Provided reliable wireless communication to support clinicians during catheter-based placement and follow-up care.
  • Enabled safe, reliable energy transfer with a custom-designed charging wand.
  • Strengthened the client's readiness for in-human trials with robust electronic systems built for long-term performance.
